With a homemade telescope, he examined space and discovered sunspots, Jupiter’s moons and the mountains and valleys of the Moon. His descriptions of the laws of falling bodies changed the field of physics. Believing that the Earth revolves around the Sun, he faced opposition from the Catholic Church, and angered philosophers who believed Aristotle’s tenant that no new object could exist in the universe. The Vatican admitted it made a mistake in condemning him in 1992, 350 years after his death.
